All the travellers who had to go to Indira Gandhi International Airport to board a flight to Dubai, here is good news for them. Chandigarh Airport is all set to have its maiden flight to Dubai on October 19, 2015. On September 11, 2015 Honourable Prime Minister Mr Narendra Modi inaugurated the Airport giving it a green signal to replace the domestic Chadigarh Airport with a fresh identity of being an International Airport. With this up-gradation, Chandigarh International Airport is the region’s second International Airport after Raja Sansi International Airport in Amritsar.
This is not all the good news that there is. Airport Authority of India has clarified that once the maiden flight to Dubai takes off , the Airport will be going global as regular flights would operate from Chandigarh to Bangkok, Sharjah, Egypt, Abu Dhabi, Doha, Muscat and Kuala Lumpur. Principal Secretary, Civil Aviation, Punjab Mr Vishwajit Khanna shared that an affirmation signal has been given by Union Civil Aviation Ministry to operate International flights from Chandigarh. Forty two such destinations that are already on the anvil, will become directly accessible for the travellers from Chandigarh. The list boasts of destinations in eastern and south – eastern countries in Asia as well as a few other southern countries. The reason Chandigarh Airport is broadening its horizons is because of the fact that a large number of people from Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Chandigarh and Uttarakhand travel abroad and have to board flights from Delhi. With Chandigarh Airport operating international flights, more passengers will be able to board the flights from Chandigarh, it being a transit point for these states there is more good news for business also.
An anticipated increase in employment opportunities in various spheres through this initiative, will lead to improvement in the standard of living of those associated with this project. Additionally, the hotel and tourism industry will also flourish as it will cater to the needs of the customers hailing from different places.
With Chandigarh Airport becoming international the good news is that all the 26 existing domestic flights that used to fly from Chandigarh Airport would be shifted to a new airport that will only have domestic flights, cargo operations, civil aviation and flying club. That means the International Airport will not be cluttered with domestic flights.
