UT Police and Administration gave a beautiful gift on Rakshabandhan to all the women of the Tricity by inaugurating the very first Women Police Station in Chandigarh at Home Guard Building in Sector 17. The inauguration was done by adviser Mr Vijay Kumar Dev who mentioned that the Women Police Station was opened, keeping in mind the safety of the women of the region. He stated that as most of the time crimes against women are not reported, opening of such women oriented Police Stations would encourage the women to report crime without any hesitation.
The opening of this first ever Women Police Station is a good news for all the victims of Dowry Cases whose files are lying pending in other Police Stations. IGP R P Upadhayay, mentioned that the Women Police Station would initially cater to the dowry cases and after a point of time would broaden its area of operation by registering cases like eve-teasing, women kidnapping, and sexual harassment.
In addition to the Police Station’s first SHO Harjeet Kaur, it has a DSP in-charge, 3 inspectors, 8 sub-inspectors and assistant sub-inspectors, 54 head constables and constables followed by 10 home guard volunteers.
Inspector General of Police R.P Upadhyay also announced that the location of the Women Police Station is temporary and that Chandigarh Administration has demarcated a land measuring 2,500 sq. m. in Sector 22 where the Police Station would eventually be shifted. However, the good news does not end here. Chandigarh women would be getting five more Women Oriented Police Stations in the proposed areas of IT Park, Sector 49, Sector 52, Maloya, Mauli Jagran and Sarangpurto ensuring that the plea of not even a single woman victim goes unheard.
With an increase in the number of crimes against women, this initiative will be a precedent for every other State and UT of the country to emulate. It validates that a strong sense of safety can be instilled among the women if the necessary and effective steps are taken in the right direction.
