Shaktimaan, Super Commando Dhruva, Krrish, Ra.One, we Indians, have tried creating our own homegrown stories of superheroes. One such heartwarming story of real life gallantry has proved that superheroes do exist beyond the world of fiction.
The Tamil Nadu Home Guards recently made an inspiring display of Nishkam Sewa (selfless service to the community) in the city of Chennai. The torrential rains had wreaked havoc on the city, submerging areas in neck-deep waters. The home guard volunteers well aware of the perils involved, have placed the well-being of the society at large above the safety of their own homes.
The organisation functions under the Tamil Nadu Home Guards Act, 1963 in all the Police Districts and Commissionerates in the state. Each unit is headed by the Commandant/Superintendent of Police in the districts , Commissioners of Police in the cities and Area Commander at the helm of the volunteers. The volunteers come from diverse social and professional backgrounds. They live a regular life, but when any emergency knocks the door, they adopt the good Samaritan role. They supplement police efforts in maintaining internal security, organising rescue work, providing relief during emergencies and other such succor activities.
Last year their zealous efforts to bring order to the chaos during the Mugalivakkam building collapse, received much appreciation. This time as well, the city is grateful to their altruism for bringing it back to life. The Joint Commissioner North, Dinakaran, recognised their valiant work and decorated four Home Guards with medals.
