Last four days Feb 4-8, the blue waters along the port city, Vishakhapatnam had turned all the more majestic and spectacular with a naval extravaganza on display. The Indian Navy organized the prestigious International Fleet Review, 2016 – a gala celebration of naval and military prowess of the country.

The magnificent warships like INS Vikramaditya, INS Virat, among others sailed with all their might like the emperors on the calm waters of the Bay of Bengal. They were joined by the mighty ships of Indian Coast Guard and Mercantile Marine. The panache of the air arm of the navy’s flypast and an undaunted display by the elite Marine Commandos left the spectators in awe and swelled them with pride.

The event was made even more glorious with the participation of foreign countries warships, whose crews and maritime officers sail the Indian Ocean. Their participation personified the theme itself ‘United through Oceans’, emphasizing the urgency of global maritime cooperation to meet the changing security scenarios.

The President of India, as the Supreme Commander of the armed forces, conducts the ceremonial inspection of the fleet once during his tenure. President Pranab Mukherjee, onboard the presidential yacht INS Sumitra, inspected the fleet of 71 Indian naval ships. Also on the yacht were Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar and three other service chiefs.

The last International Fleet Review was held off Mumbai in 2001.
