The grandiose of ‘Make in India Week’ (13th-18th February, 2016) kicked off amidst spectacular fanfare in Mumbai on 13 February. The event assumed much significance for the Indian economy  as it aimed to showcase India’s untapped potential in design, innovation and sustainability across manufacturing sectors. Not only to woo global investors, the event brought together the first generation entrepreneurs and the seasoned businessmen on the same platform to discuss, debate and develop strategies for the 21st century India.

September 2014, the Indian government unveiled its ‘Make In India’ initiative, which in no time became the new mantra of economic development in the country, replacing ‘Made in India’, hence infusing the much needed self-confidence in the country that ‘we are second to none’. Dedicated policy reforms and initiatives were made to make the environment compatible for manufacturing, design, innovation and start-ups in the country (for instance Start-Up India, Skill India and Digital India). Consequently, last year India improved its position on World Bank’s Ease of Doing Business index by climbing 12 spots to 130.

The ‘Make in India Week’ rekindled the spark in the entrepreneurs and seasoned businessmen to work with extra vigour to make India a manufacturing hub. The programmes in the event spoke volumes of the zealous efforts to make the ‘Make in India’ a success. The main features of the programme were:

  • Make in India Center: Exhibited the most innovative products and manufacturing processes that had been developed across sectors.
  • The Global Design & Innovation: Branding India Globally : Focused on knowledge sharing, entrepreneurial attitudes, creative benchmarks and industry trends to create a brand for India.
  • Driving innovation: Hackathon : Creative solutions for urban design problems was its goal and coders, engineers and designers from reputed institutions deliberated on the same.
  • Seminar on Make in India-The Way Forward: With the speakers from a who’s who of the business world, it aimed to provide a platform for industry leaders, policy makers and key players to discuss the impact of Make in India.
  • Empowering Through Design: A forum on rethinking contemporary design practices against the backdrop of manufacturing and promoting India as a global centre of the design.
