The current budget proposed a major push to Prime Minister’s `Jan Aushadhi’ scheme. While presenting the budget the Finance Minister stressed on the need for making and providing quality medicines at affordable prices. He stated that the government intends to reinvigorate the supply of generic drugs. It was also proposed that 3,000 stores under the Prime Minister’s Jan Aushadhi Yojana will be opened during 2016-17.
Through the scheme, The main aim of the government is to ensure the availability of quality medicines at reasonable prices. The affordable quality drugs available at the specialized outlets will significantly cater to the needs of the common man and the underprivileged, especially suffering from chronic ailments.
With the success of the scheme in the recent past, the government has announced a considerable expansion. According to the Department of Pharmaceuticals, the number of medicines under the Jan Aushadhi Scheme will be increased from 361 to 500. The Stores will also cater 439 life saving drugs and 250 medical devices at cheaper rates. Non-governmental organizations, private hospitals, charitable organizations, and professional institutions will also be allowed to open Jan Aushadhi Stores. M.D Sreekumar, CEO of the Bereau of Pharma PSUs of India (BPPI) assured that at least 425 generic medicines will be available at the Jan Aushadhi Stores in various states and Union Territories.
The popularization of low-cost generic medicines is seen as a major step by the government. It surely indicates a positive change, making health care more affordable for the common man.
