The Golden Girl – World Champion Gymnast, Prabhot Kaur Bajwa
We met the shy girl, Prabhjot Kaur Bajwa at her resident. Her quite demeanour changed into vigour and she had sparkles in her eyes the moment she started speaking about the game. Ms. PrabhJot Kaur Bajwa, 23 years old International champion is also known as the “Golden Girl” was trained under the guidance of Arjuna awardee Dr Kalpana Debnath in Netaji Subhash National Institute of Sports, Patiala (Panjab). She started her professional training in gymnastics when she was 12 years old, while she was informally training under her father who is also a gymnastics coach since the age of 8. She played her 1st national champion ship, Sub Junior National in Rhythmic Gymnastics, at the age of 13 and won 3 silver and 2 bronze and stood 3rd in the championship. She played her 1st international Championship at the age of 16. Prabhjot today has won more than 35 medals from national and international games.
Stressing upon the importance of strength training and sports amongst the children from a young age, she mentioned, “Gymnastic helps in increasing endurance and mental strength of the children which is required for an overall personality development. Gymnastics as a game has a lot of glamour. It is the only game which a girl can play being a girl. Other games have expectations of super strength, muscles power and stamina but gymnastics can bring out the beauty in a girl”.
A large part of the population in India must be busy in indulging in technological advancements or participating in politics and political youth movements, there is a small part of the same population which is conscientiously working hard to skill upgrade themselves and bring glory to the country at the highest level. When we asked PrabhJot some questions related to politics, she politely replied that her game is the only thing she strives and lives for.
Prabhjot may belong to a sport which is not as sensational as cricket or hockey in India, but her laurels definitely make us all proud. Coming from a financially humble back ground, she is a young achiever and a huge inspiration to the entire generation.
