Dr Bhavneet Bharti, a pediatrician at Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) has proved that love and compassion can create the most beautiful changes in society. Healing for her is not limited to the OPD timings or her clinic. Without a second thought to the long queues of patients at her clinic, Dr Bharti approaches the needy personally and takes them to PGI for treatment. She does not hold herself back even if the case is beyond her professional specialisation. Dr Bharti tries to help the patients with their tests and treatment by consulting her colleagues in the institute.
Recently during her usual round within the PGI campus, Dr Bharti learnt that a middle-aged man had been misdiagnosed. She arranged for an accurate diagnosis of the patient and began the treatment immediately.
Another recipient of Dr Bharti’s succour was a sick unattended infant near a construction site in Chandigarh. With the team of her doctors, she pursued the officials at PGI and the UT administration to start a crèche for the labourers working at the construction site. Today she and her team of doctors visit the crèche near the 250-bedded hospital once a week to examine the health of the children. She ensures the holistic development of the children in the crèche by taking recreational trips with them to places like the zoo, in addition to the healthcare services.
“I want them to be independent and explore the world their way. These children are very intelligent. With proper care of health and education, they can do extremely well,” she said.
Dr Bharti has exemplified for us that an act of kindness is not dependent on infrastructure or money. Responsible and educated citizens like Dr. Bharti shine the beacon of their light on others and thereby add more meaning to the word ‘occupation’.
