With the arrival of Shatabdi on the Indian railway scene, the word ‘express’ started meaning to us what it actually means—fast. Its grand speed was a new and thrilling experience for the commuters and for years the nation basked in the glory of its grandeur. Well, the scenario is all set to change now. Gatimaan Express, with its claim of covering the distance between Agra and New Delhi in 113 minutes as compared to 115 minutes taken by Shatabdi, has become the new name in speed.

Running fast and furious at the top speed of 160 kms/hr, Gatimaan will now be India’s fastest train. The Initial time frame planned by the Government for Gatimaan was 90 minutes which was later revised to 100 minutes. However, on 31st March this year, when Gatimaan did a speed check, it was realized that the time taken would be close to 113 minutes.

The reasons cited for this revision were the fact that it takes 10-15 minutes to reach Hazrat Nizammudin after leaving New Delhi and also that it has to pass through Mathura Yard which is being upgraded. The Railways Ministry has generously allocated close to 60 crores to ensure that Gatimaan Express reaches its optimum speed and is in a position to compete with Global fast running trains. Mr Arunendra Kumar, former Railway Board Chairman has mentioned that the planned target of 90 minutes is well within reach without compromising the safety of the passengers.

Well, sounds promising and we surely look forward to experiencing the thrill and magnificence of Gatimaan Express. It definitely looks like Indian Railways is going places !!!
