Uttar Pradesh Pledges Food to the Poor in Bundelkhand

The Uttar Pradesh government has come to the rescue of the 2.3 lakh Antodaya (poorest-of-the-poor) families in the drought-hit Bundelkhand region by pledging to provide free food to them every month. The region is marred by consecutive droughts and famines which has left trails of heart-wrenching distress stories of starvation and destitution. This government intervention has brought them a much needed relief.

The media has brought to the limelight, how due to consecutive years of scanty rainfall and hailstorms crops have been destroyed leading to malnutrition and starvation in the region. Due to this, around 18 lakh people which is about 10% of the population here have migrated to Delhi only in the last one year. This distress migration has not only exacerbated the plight of the families left behind, but has also posed a challenge on urban infrastructure to absorb them.

The enlightening media reports have stirred the administration into action. The Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav flagged off the relief programme Samajwadi Sukha Rahat Samagri Vitaran Karyakram recently in Mahoba, one of the worst-hit districts in the region. The District Magistrates have also been ordered to take all necessary measures to ensure zero hunger-related death in the region.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has also taken suo-moto cognisance of the situation. It has asked Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh governments to submit a report on the plight of the people in Bundelkhand and actions taken by the governments to mitigate it.
