UGC is set to grant INR 10 crores to introduce Yoga education in universities. Human Resource and Development ministry has arrived at this decision, in order to revive yoga and make it a popular lifestyle choice. The universities would have a separate department by the name of Department of Yogic Arts and Science wherein experts from Ramdev’s Patanjali Yogpeeth would be invited as guest lecturers to initiate various courses.
A 12 member team will be formed for the purpose and it would be headed by Mr H R Nagendra. Prime Minister Narendra Modi who is considered to be the brain behind this initiative, has also urged that NET exams should be conducted for this course so that qualified teachers are appointed in universities. “The NET exam is to be conducted from this year onwards if not in June then by December positively,” said a committee member.
The committee whose head is HRD minister, Ms Smriti Irani has suggested that the course would be bifurcated in six different fields that would range from certificate courses to PhD. The syllabus outlines for these six courses are yet to be formulated but the PhD can be done in two fields that are, general and therapy.
“The course content of these six different courses would focus on the practical aspects of yoga. Even though the committee has submitted its report on the same in March, still suitable changes would be done on the basis of recommendations.” stated Pandit Radhey Shyam, Director, Ujjain Yoga Life Society and also a member of the committee.
The panel was asked to present a report on the scope of the programmes initiated at Certificate, Diploma, Degree, Post Graduate Degree or Research level. Apart from this the panel is also required to prescribe the syllabus for NET exam as well as the eligibility criteria for the students who aspire to join the course at different levels.
This pioneering step to revive an old tradition will certainly pave the way forward for India. The benefits of yoga have enamored the world for decades, now its study and propagation will receive a big boost.
