A New Bill to Control Underage Driving Issue

A new bill has been proposed by the union government to curb the problem of underage driving. This bill, if passed, will make parents of minor drivers liable in case of violation of law by their wards. This news came a week after CNN-News18 aired a campaign story on the menace of underage drivers.

A high level committee of road transport ministers of all the states chaired by Rajasthan transport minister Yunus Khan has been constituted by the government to draft the new bill.

Union transport minister Nitin Gadkari has authorised the committee to come up with a new bill which will make the parents of underage drivers liable for the crime the minor commits. The committee will submit the final report in next 15 days.

Addressing the urgent need of the hour, this positive step initiated by the government comes as a promising  solution to the increasing problem.

With this new bill, we are hopeful that parents will be more responsible. This initiative will make them think twice before handing over a vehicle to their wards which will in turn help in reducing the cases of underage driving. Further, the government has also asked the committee to frame a foolproof policy as the ministry targets to reduce the road accidents by 50% in the next 5 years. The transport ministry has identified 720 black spots on national highways across the country and Rs 11000 crore have been earmarked to take remedial steps.

The above measures adopted by the government are expected to reduce the chances of accidents on the highways and make the roads of the country safer for people.
