Women Self Help Group (SHG) members have eight more shops now to market their produce and products. The district administration of Madurai district in Tamil Nadu, has built these shops for the SHGs on the premises of the District Supply Marketing Society on Anna Salai, a commercial area in Chennai. The new shops were added to the existing nine shops, which will enable the women SHGs to market the produce made by them.
“The SHGs can sell products manufactured by them, or those purchased from SHGs in other districts at these shops. The members of a farmer collective livelihood group (CLG) are selling fruits at one of the shops and another CLG is selling jute bags.” said G. Loganayaki, project director of Mahalir Thittam.
Women SHG is run under the scheme of The Tamil Nadu Corporation for Development of Women (TNCDW) which was established in 1983, a major anti-poverty programme working for self-employment of rural poor with the prime objective of bringing about socio-economic development and empowerment of women. SHG is a group of 12 to 20 women of the same socio-economic background who come forward voluntarily to work together for their own upliftment.
The eight new shops were inaugurated by collector R. Nanthagopal. The shops were constructed at the cost of INR 5.4 lakhs.
The good news is that this will bring greater synergy and better coordination. It will be successful in bringing about social and economic empowerment of women.
